Complete Hostel Packing Checklist for Students in India (2026)

March 5, 2026 8 min read

Moving to a hostel for the first time is a milestone moment. It is exciting, a little nerve-wracking, and comes with the all-important question: what should I pack? Pack too little and you will be scrambling to buy essentials in a new city. Pack too much and you will be dragging heavy suitcases and cluttering your shared room.

This comprehensive checklist is designed specifically for Indian students heading to hostels or PGs anywhere in the country. We have organized everything by category so you can go through it systematically.

1. Important Documents (Do NOT Forget These!)

Keep these in a waterproof folder or pouch. Carry both originals and photocopies.

  • College admission letter / offer letter
  • 10th and 12th marksheets (originals + 5 photocopies each)
  • Transfer Certificate (TC)
  • Migration Certificate
  • Character Certificate
  • Aadhaar Card (original + 5 photocopies)
  • Passport-size photographs (carry at least 20)
  • College ID card (once issued)
  • Medical fitness certificate (if required by college)
  • Caste / Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Income certificate (if applying for scholarships)
  • Bank passbook or account details
  • Fee payment receipts
  • Hostel allotment letter (if applicable)

2. Clothing

Pack smart — you do not need your entire wardrobe. Remember, you can always buy more locally if needed. Tailor your clothing to the city's climate. Indore, for instance, gets very hot in summer (40°C+) and fairly cold in winter (5-10°C).

  • Casual Wear: 5-7 t-shirts, 3-4 pairs of jeans/trousers, 2-3 shorts
  • Formal/College Wear: 2-3 formal shirts, 1-2 formal trousers (some colleges have dress codes)
  • Winter Wear: 1-2 warm jackets, 2 sweaters, thermal innerwear (for cold months)
  • Sleepwear: 2-3 comfortable sets
  • Undergarments: 7-10 sets (enough for a week between laundry runs)
  • Socks: 5-7 pairs
  • Footwear: 1 pair of sneakers/sports shoes, 1 pair of formal shoes, 1 pair of slippers/flip-flops (for hostel use), 1 pair of bathroom slippers
  • Rain Gear: 1 rain jacket or umbrella
  • Sportswear: 1-2 sets if you play sports

3. Electronics & Gadgets

  • Laptop: Essential for assignments, projects, and online resources. Carry the charger and a laptop bag.
  • Smartphone: Your primary communication device. Carry the charger and a spare charging cable.
  • Power Bank: 10,000-20,000 mAh for backup power
  • Extension Board / Power Strip: Hostel rooms often have limited outlets. A 4-6 socket extension board is a must.
  • Earphones/Headphones: Essential for studying without disturbing your roommate
  • Pen Drive / Portable Hard Drive: For backups and file sharing
  • Calculator: Scientific calculator if required for your course
  • Table Lamp / Desk Light: For late-night studying without disturbing your roommate (check if hostel provides one)
  • Portable Speaker: Optional, but nice for unwinding (keep it low volume out of respect)

4. Study Materials & Stationery

  • Notebooks / Registers (5-6 to start)
  • Pens (blue, black, red — a pack of each)
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Highlighters (3-4 colors)
  • Ruler, compass, protractor (for engineering students)
  • Sticky notes / Post-it notes
  • A4 sheets (a ream — always useful)
  • Stapler and pins
  • File folders (5-6 for organizing notes by subject)
  • Drawing instruments (if required for your course)
  • Any prescribed textbooks your college has specified

Tip: Do not buy all your textbooks before arriving. Seniors often sell second-hand books at 50-70% off, and you can find most reference materials in the library or online.

5. Toiletries & Personal Care

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and a toothbrush holder
  • Soap / Body wash and a soap case
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Face wash
  • Deodorant / Perfume
  • Shaving kit (razor, shaving cream, aftershave)
  • Hair comb and hair oil
  • Nail cutter
  • Sunscreen (important for Indore's hot climate)
  • Moisturizer / Body lotion (especially for winter)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Tissue paper / Wet wipes
  • Towels (2-3 bath towels, 2 hand towels)

6. Bedding & Room Essentials

Check with your hostel first — many furnished hostels provide bedding, which saves you a lot of packing space.

  • Bedsheet (2-3 sets)
  • Pillow and pillow covers (2)
  • Blanket or quilt (1 light + 1 warm for winter)
  • Mattress protector
  • Mosquito repellent (coil, liquid, or patches)
  • Hanger set (5-10 hangers)
  • Small mirror (if not provided)
  • Clothes drying clips and a small rope/line
  • Bucket and mug (for bathroom — check if provided)
  • Door lock / Padlock with keys (for your cupboard or room)

7. Medicine & First Aid

  • Basic first-aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic cream, cotton)
  • Paracetamol / Fever medicine (Crocin, Dolo)
  • Headache medicine
  • Stomach upset medicine (Digene, Pudin Hara)
  • Cold and cough medicine
  • Allergy medicine (if you have known allergies)
  • Any prescription medicines you take regularly
  • Electrolyte sachets (ORS)
  • Pain relief spray or balm (Moov, Volini)

8. Miscellaneous but Important

  • Water bottle (1-2 reusable bottles)
  • Small backpack / College bag
  • Laundry bag
  • Sewing kit (needle, thread, buttons — surprisingly useful)
  • Snacks from home (namkeen, biscuits, dry fruits — great for homesickness)
  • Alarm clock (or rely on your phone)
  • Wallet with some cash
  • Umbrella
  • Small toolkit (screwdriver set — handy for minor fixes)
  • Photos from home (for your desk or wall — a personal touch)

What NOT to Pack

Equally important — here is what to leave behind:

  • Expensive jewelry or valuables: Theft can happen. Leave them at home.
  • Too many clothes: You can always buy more locally or have parents send them.
  • Large appliances: Iron, room heater, cooking appliances — most hostels do not allow these for safety reasons.
  • Unnecessary kitchen supplies: If your hostel provides meals, you do not need utensils.
  • Heavy books: Only bring what is immediately needed. Buy/borrow the rest later.
  • Too many decorative items: Space is limited in shared rooms.

Pro Tips for First-Time Hostel Students

  • Label everything: Write your name on items that could get mixed up in laundry.
  • Contact your hostel beforehand: Ask what is provided (bed, mattress, pillow, fan, table, chair, cupboard) so you do not duplicate.
  • Pack in stages: Carry essentials on day one. Have parents courier or bring the rest later.
  • Digital copies of documents: Scan all important documents and keep them on your phone and Google Drive/cloud.
  • Emergency contacts list: Write down parents' numbers, a local guardian's number, and the nearest hospital.
  • Keep a small cash reserve: ATMs might not be nearby. Keep Rs 2,000-3,000 as emergency cash.
  • Be a good roommate: Respect shared space, keep your area clean, and communicate openly.
